Business Consultant for Lawn Care and Landscaping Companies
Like many of us in the Green Industry, I stumbled into it between semesters at college. During college, I also worked on a palm tree farm in Central Florida.
After graduating, I took a few years to teach at a school for at-risk students. I worked my way back by selling Lawn Care door-to-door for a large national company. (I know what you're thinking - not that one.) I spent a year getting an education in how marketing and advertising work by doing B2B media sales before returning to Lawn Care sales. I worked door-to-door sales for six years in total, and developed a reputation as one of the most consistent performers in my market. I learned the nuances of both door-to-door and inside sales during this time, working inside sales campaigns for lawn care, soil amendments, grub control, aeration and overseeding, and perimeter pest control.
After leaving the national company, I worked for a local full-service landscaper in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They were just getting their feet wet with the idea of inside sales, and I was their first successful hire. I had to develop their Inside Sales processes from scratch. I started in July, and by late September they had to pull me off the phones and put me in the field; we'd oversold our ability to produce the work. I also began my consulting work at this time, consulting with a business that now runs a national franchise model on establishing their processes for selling Lawn Care services.
At this business, I eventually grew into the responsibility of running a team of salespeople and admins, as well as overseeing all the marketing functions for the business. We grew by more than 30% during my time there and opened a new location in a neighboring market. The year I left, the business billed well into the 8-figure range.
I had another short break away from the Green Industry, this time with a digital marketing agency. It taught me a ton about how the internet works.
I then returned to work for an industry-specific CRM. They approached me because they didn't have anyone on their team who had actual industry experience. During that time I wrote blogs, published best-practices for Sales, Marketing, Change Management, Recruiting & Retention, and Reporting for Green Industry businesses. I also spoke at conferences, was published in several industry magazines, and hosted over 100 episodes of a podcast where I interviewed the best experts our industry has to offer.
It was during this time that I really learned about the great keys to employee recruiting and retention for our industry (collating my personal experiences and countless interviews with Green Industry business owners). I also learned a LOT about change management by discovering which owners and managers had set their teams up for a successful onboarding of the new software, and which hadn't.
After another stint away (this time conducting missionary work overseas for two years), I landed at a large landscape company as the Director of Sales. During my brief tenure there, the company hit an important milestone; they had their two best months (in terms of billing) in the company's eighteen year history.
